Malta Economic Update Article - RIDING THE STORMY WAVE - an IT company’s experience of the recession (28/01/2010)

17 December 2009

The Economic Update catches up with locally owned Philip Toledo Ltd, one of Malta’s largest and leading IT companies, to find out how the sector has been affected over the past year, and what they see in the near future.

Established in 1946, Philip Toledo Ltd is Malta’s oldest privately-owned information technology company, providing IT and Security Solutions, primarily targeting government, health, banking, professional services, insurance, hospitality, retail and the commercial sectors. As one of the largest IT companies on the island, PTL currently employs more than 100 professional members of staff and runs an extensive ongoing employee training programme to maintain the best service they can provide to their clientele.

Mr Colin B. German, Business Software Department Manager, explains that just like other companies PTL has experienced the effects of the economic climate since businesses are a lot more cautious about their expenditure leading some to invest less on IT solutions. Despite this, some aspects of the company have flourished as PTL has given customers assistance with efficient systems to help them in this unsteady time.
“My ten years within PTL have given me the opportunity to understand how the company has changed, and is changing, with constant new technologies and markets; giving me the confidence to look ahead to a bright future both in Malta and overseas,” states Mr German.

During 2009 PTL was awarded the Cisco Select Partner of the Year for the Mediterranean region, as well as the Access Dealer of the Year Award once again. “Despite being a ‘slow’ year, it has been a busy year. We have taken the opportunity to plan, to invest further in skills and to look ahead at new work and technologies,” explains Mr German.
Within the last 12 months, Philip Toledo Ltd has also launched a new locally designed and developed product in the hospitality sector. “We have seen market growth for, Prospero, and have implemented more local sites and interfaced with various telephone and lock-door security systems,” says Mr German. “We have also implemented Malta’s first cashless POS system and interfaced it to Prospero. In addition to our local market we have also signed up an overseas dealer in a Mediterranean country..”
The last 12 months have also been a time of investment for PTL in other sectors. “It has been a year of patience and investment for our Access Dimensions ERP offering.

Together with our clients we are all already starting to experience some benefits.” stated Mr. German excitedly while discussing various areas of PTL’s core business. He also explained how in the retail sector PTL continued to grow and win over large and prestigious retail clients with its Retail Pro product suite and how the software development side of PTL also experienced a busy year both with developing enhancements to existing applications, as well as with developing software applications from scratch.
PTL is also an IBM Advanced Business Partner in Malta and is currently subcontracted by IBM to work on various projects. “With IBM, we are using innovative, new technologies not typically seen in local projects,” explains Mr German, “technologies that put us at the forefront of IT and enable us to bring innovation to local businesses.”

Despite many falling victim to the woes of the recession, Philip Toledo Ltd has in fact experienced a state of growth, adding over 25 new members of staff in 2009 alone and they see further growth for 2010. “Our brands and solutions have continued to grow and deliver.”
“Looking ahead, we intend to consolidate our current markets and customers and further develop our local and overseas clientele,” states Mr German. “Our aim is to always better understand our customers’ needs and to build solutions that will continue to add value to their organisations.”
